One just can't get enough of spending time in the sweet and cozy cafes in Graz. Wether you bring along your laptop to work or study in peace, or come to spend a cozy afternoon with friends over coffee or tea, your time is going to be well spent either way. Here are some of the most popular coffee houses frequently visited by students. By Mina Mihailovic
#1 The Beanery Specialty Coffee Graz
If you have a break between lectures, like to spend time in Stadtpark or just live around the Karl Franzens University campus, Beanery Specialty Coffee Graz is a great place to have a coffee or tea. It is a very calm and great place for work, study and concentration. The staff is very friendly and will be happy to help you choose coffee or tea.
My recommendation: Homemade ice tea
Tribeka is one of the most popular coffee places in Graz and you can find them at multiple locations in the city. If you are taking a walk around the old city, you can find Tribeka in Kaiserfeldgasse, or if you enjoy walking along the Mur river, then you can also find other Tribeka in Grieskai street. The interior is in a loft style and is a favorite gathering place for many. You can enjoy a big choice of coffee variations. You can also try delicious sweets here.
- My recommendation: Cheesecake with hot latte
#3 BUNA Kaffee
This is a very tiny place where you will feel like home. You can sit here and enjoy coffees freshly made from a multiple award winning barista. The shop roasts it’s own coffee here. Their roastery is currently in the process of becoming BIO-certified so that they can also sell the organic coffees. You can even try to do so too with varying workshops and training. Also, you can choose the music for your own, from a collection of vinyls available.
- My recommendation: Ethiopian cappuccino
#4 Cafe Schwalbennest
In the heart of the city, near the Mur River, you will spot one small house with a red facade and green shutters. This romantic place, with a terrace in the shade which makes it perfect to visit during warmer months, is perfect for brunch. The view over the river and the closeby squares are beautiful. The coffee there is very delicious. Here you can also try traditional Austrian cakes such as homemade sweet poppy seed and cheese curd tort.
- My recommendation: Flavored hot chocolate made by famous local chocolate maker Zotter
#5 Cafe Fotter
Located close to Karl Franzens University and Stadtpark, this institution of coffee, with over 80 years of history, is one of the oldest cafes in Graz. It is also a great place for breakfast where you can find local, seasonal Styrian products as well as homemade soft drinks. But probably the most charming and unique part of the cafe is the rose garden. In a picturesque inner courtyard from the Wilhelminian era, you can enjoy your coffee or cake between roses and fruit trees.
- My recommendation: homemade lemonade Rose blossom
