Hi everyone, I am Vlada and I lived in Floridsdorf, in Thomas Morus Heim, for 4 years. Many people have prejudices against the 21st district, saying it’s far from the center, there’s no entertainment, it’s not very clean, and it’s unsafe. Having lived there for 4 years, I can confidently say that none of this is true! It’s a wonderful district, and the dormitory is located in a very convenient spot — not only with a direct train to the main station and the airport, but also to the city center and other parts of Vienna. However, the location itself offers plenty of activities that don’t require going to the city center.
On top of that, just a 5-minute walk from the dormitory there is a shop with the most delicious ice cream I have ever tried — Perugini. All my friends agree with me! Be sure to stop by if you live in Thomas Morus Heim.
In summer, you have a unique opportunity that most of Vienna’s population — and residents of other dormitories — don’t have: you can swim in the Danube (Alte Donau)! The swimming spot is only a 15-minute walk from the dormitory, completely free, and open 24/7.
Besides swimming in the Danube, just 7 minutes on foot from the dormitory there is a park — “Wasserpark”, open year-round. It’s a green area with walking paths, benches, a lake with swans and ducks. You can go there for a jog, take a walk along the hidden paths, organize a picknick with friends, or simply sit with a book and enjoy the fresh air.
In addition to the park, within a 15-minute walk you can reach the Danube Island (“Donauinsel”), where many festivals take place in summer. There are also places for swimming, cycling, jogging, and long walks.
And the list of activities around the dormitory doesn’t end there. Just one train stop away is the “Millennium Center”, where you’ll find cafés, restaurants, a cinema, a game zone with bowling and billiards. It’s a great place to have fun with friends, especially in bad weather.
Finally, I’d like to mention a slightly more distant spot for enjoying the outdoors — the last stop of tram 31, “Stammersdorf”. Few people know that just a 20-minute tram ride (with the stop conveniently located near the dormitory) takes you right to the border of Vienna! Imagine that! Fresh air, a walk through the hills, the autumn wine festival, traditional Austrian taverns (Heurigen) with prices lower than central restaurants, and charming streets of what was once an Austrian village, now part of Vienna.
In conclusion, I want to say that I can confidently recommend Thomas Morus Heim not only for its great community, but also for its location.
All the best and enjoy the area,
Vlada
