History of Akademikerhilfe

Akademikerhilfe was founded in 1921 as a Roman-Catholic association by University Chaplain Prelate Dr. Karl Rudolf. In the course of the past 90 years Akademikerhilfe was able to expand all over Austria and now runs 19 student residence halls. Currently Akademikerhilfe student residences are home to about 3.400 students.

2011 Re-opening of "Pfeilheim" residence in Vienna 8, Pfeilgasse 4-6. The student residence in Vienna 7, Lerchenfelder Strasse 1-3 is closed and abandoned.
2010 Opening of a new residence in Leoben, Goesserstrasse 15.
2009 Opening of a new residence in Graz, Muenzgrabenstrasse 59. The "Pfeilheim" residence in Vienna, Pfeilgasse 4-6, is closed for complete renovations.
2008 Completion of the renovation on the residence in Salzburg, Priesterhausgasse 6.
2007 12 places are rented at the Seminary in Vienna 9, Boltzmanngasse 7. A new residence for 72 students is opened in Vienna 15, Matthias Schoenerer Gasse 11.
2006 Construction and opening of a new residence for 60 students in Leoben, Schillerstrasse 29.
1999 Construction and opening of of a new residence for 200 students in Linz, Pulvermuehlstrasse 41.
1997 Opening of an apartment house for students in Vienna 20, Handelskai 78-86.
  Purchase of "Schwarzes Roessl" in Salzburg, Priesterhausgasse 6.
1995 Completion of renovations at the "Wiener Heim".
1993 Purchase of Hotel Ibis Innsbruck and opening as a residence for 95 students.
1989 Purchages of "Student Village Klagenfurt" (Studentenheim Gesellschaft m.b.H.).
1986 Takeover and renovation of a residence in Vienna 18, Starkfriedgasse 15.
1981 Opening of a new residence for 275 students in Vienna 7, Lerchenfelder Strasse 1-3.
1975 Completion of a new residence for 228 students in Graz, Untere Schoenbrunngasse 7-11.
1971 Hotel "Schwarzes Roessl" in Salzburg, Priesterhausgasse 6, is opened as a student residence for 85 students.
1969 Opening of a student canteen in the residence in Vienna 8, Pfeilgasse 3a.
1969/70 The residence in Vienna 18, Michaelerstrasse 11, is turned into a residence for female students.
1968 Opening of a new residence in Vienna 8, Pfeilgasse 1a. First allocations to female students.
1967 Purchase of the republic-owned property in Vienna 8, Pfeilgasse 4-6.
1965-67 Step-by-step opening of the new residence Pfeilgasse 3a for a total of 386 students.
1963 Generous extension of the residence in Graz, Elisabethstrasse 93, for 379 students.
1957 Takeover of the residence Pfeilgasse 4.
1955 Release of "Wiener Heim" by the occupying force.
1952 Release of the residence Pfeilgasse 6 by the occupying force.
1949 Purchase of the residences in Leoben, Schillerstrasse 27, for 100 students and in Graz, Elisabethstrasse 93, for 50 students. In 1949 Akademikerhilfe provides places for 274 students.
1948 Takeover of a residence for 92 students of technology that was previously owned by a certain "Pollak-Rudin Foundation" named"Rudolfinum".
1946-49 Accommodation of students in private apartments. Akademikerhilfe procures spare-time jobs and raises funds for food and clothes.
1945-46 The former association members Dipl.-Ing. Mayr, Dr. Kummer, Dr. Donner and Dkfm. Kail file a petition to revoke the liquidation of Akademikerhilfe enforced by the Nazi regime. The Vienna Magistrate consents to the re-constitution of the association.
1945-55 Occupation of the residences first by the Soviet, then by the US occupying forces.
1939-45 Use of the "Pfeilheim" residences as military hospitals of the German army. "Wiener Heim" is turned into the headquarters of the National Socialist German Students' League.
1939 Enforced liquidation of Akademikerhilfe
1938 Takeover of residences by the National Socialist German Worker's Party (NSDAP).
1934-38 Akademikerhilfe acts as trustee for other organisations that run student residences.
1932 Completion of another student residence in Vienna 8, Pfeilgasse 6, also planned by Prof. Clemens Holzmeister. In 1932 Akademikerhilfe provides places for 520 students.
1927 Construction of a residence in Vienna 18, Michaelerstrasse 11, ("Wiener Heim") for 100 students planned by Prof. Clemens Holzmeister and funded by the state.
1924 Number of residence places: 150.
1923-24 In 2 state-owned buildings in Vienna 9, Sensengasse 2a und 3a, several rooms are dedicated as student residence places.
1921 The Student Care Committee is turned into and renamed Student Support Society Akademikerhilfe. Official date of the foundation is November 21st, 1921.
1920 The residence in Vienna 8, Piaristengasse 45, is rented from the Piarist Order with a long-term contract.
1918 The foundation of a joint committee of all RC university student associations of Vienna is initiated by Student Chaplain Prelate Dr. Karl Rudolf with the aim to establish a Student Care Committee in order to provide affordable accommodation for students.
